Frangokastello marks the feast of Agios Nikitas with one of Sfakia's older traditions still running: the Nikiteia, a set of athletic contests (races, tests of strength, the kind of thing that has been happening here for generations) held right by the Venetian fortress, alongside the church liturgy and free traditional refreshments for everyone who turns up. Both schoolchildren and adults from the area take part in the games rather than watch.
