APOCOSMOS: Sfakian Madares, photographs by Giorgos Patroudakis
Thirty years of photographs from Crete's mountain desert, the Sfakian Madares, at the Grand Arsenal and Yali Mosque, 8 to 28 Nov.
Three decades of photographs from the high White Mountains, by journalist and photographer Giorgos Patroudakis, come to Chania for three weeks. The Sfakian Madares are what the show calls Crete's wild west: a mountain desert of bare conical peaks, sinkholes and chasms, cypresses counted among the oldest trees in Europe, and a shepherding culture of stone koumi huts, mitata and cheese-making that still keeps very old rhythms. In Chania the exhibition splits in two: Out of Time, on the people of the Madares, at the Grand Arsenal, and Out of the World, on the mountain desert and its trees, at the Yali Mosque on the harbour. Open 10:00 to 20:00; organised by the Region of Crete as the closing event of the Crete Festival 2026.
