Dekapentavgoustos Panigiria — Apokoronas Villages

The 15 August village festivals light up across Apokoronas: lyra, raki and dancing to dawn. Free, everyone welcome.

The nights of 14 and 15 August are the most festive of the whole Chania summer, and the Apokoronas plain is their heart. Across villages like Alikampos, Kefalas, Fres, Pemonia and Litsarda, the panigiria for the Assumption of the Virgin fill the square by the church: bands of lyra and laouto, pentozali and syrto, plates of village food, raki poured freely, and dancing that carries on to first light. There is no ticket and no stage act, just the real thing, and any villager will wave you in. Ask locally which village is celebrating on which night, as the biggest crowds gather on the 15th.
