The Askyfou plateau is the flat green bowl you cross on the road down to Chora Sfakion, ringed by mountains and startlingly quiet. The cultural association there, Agios Manolis ek Sfakion, runs this one with the Municipality of Sfakia, and the poster is blunt about what twenty euros gets you: a rich Sfakian table and wine, with young children at ten. Nikos Karkanis plays, with Vasilis Kryovrysanakis and Tasos Klados on laouto and Manousos Kounalakis on daoulaki and winds. Sfakian hospitality is not a marketing phrase up here, it is closer to a competitive sport, so arrive hungry.
