Chamber Music I — Departures & Transcendence

Beethoven's String Trio Op. 9 and Enescu's rarely played String Octet open the festival.

The opening night pairs early Beethoven with a piece you may never get another chance to hear live. The String Trio in G major, Op. 9 No. 1 is Beethoven at his most confident before the symphonies, and then eight players take on Enescu's String Octet, a dense, headlong forty minutes written when the composer was nineteen. Noe Inui, Roman Simović and Josef Špaček lead the strings. Fifteen euros for playing of this standard is the best-value ticket of the Chania summer, and it starts at 21:00 sharp.
