Chamber Music VI — Tradition & Memory at Ancient Aptera
Skalkottas, Kodály and Brahms in the restored ancient theatre above Souda Bay. Free with a ticket.
Of all the evenings on this calendar, this is the one to move things around for. The ancient theatre at Aptera sits on a plateau looking down the length of Souda Bay, it was restored and reopened only a few years ago, and the acoustics do what Greek theatres have always done. Giorgos Demertzis opens with Skalkottas's solo violin sonata, then Kodály's Duo for violin and cello, then Brahms's second String Quintet as the light goes. Entry is free but you need a ticket, and release is listed as TBA, so watch the festival site. Bring something warm, the plateau cools fast after dark.
