Festival
14th Chania Film Festival
Twelve days of Greek and international film at the Cultural Centre, 21 October to 1 November, opening with Koundouros's The Ogre of Athens.
The Chania Film Festival is the city's big autumn fixture, and its 14th edition fills both halls of the Cultural Centre from Wednesday 21 October to Sunday 1 November. The opening night starts at 20:00 (doors from 19:30) with a ceremony honouring Marinella Vlachaki and Dimitris Kalogerakis, then Nikos Koundouros's 1956 classic The Ogre of Athens on the big screen, while the second hall runs a block of international shorts. After that it is days of fiction, documentary, animation and student films in competition, many with the directors there for a Q&A, plus school screenings, workshops, a podcast room and VR screenings, and the awards on the final Sunday morning. It is the rare chance in Chania to watch new Greek cinema with the people who made it in the room. Check the day-by-day programme on the festival site before you go.
