1st Chania Sculpture Symposium

Leading Greek sculptors carve in the open at the Park of Peace and Friendship, in public view, until 14 October.

Chania has started a sculpture symposium, and the good part is that it happens outdoors where anyone can watch. Until 14 October the Park of Peace and Friendship is a working yard for a group of major Greek sculptors, all of them born in the 1930s and 1940s, many of whom spent careers teaching the generations that followed them: Cris Gianakos, Giorgos Houliaras, Aspasia Papadoperaki, Theodoros Papagiannis, Yannis Parmakelis, Kyriakos Rokos and Manolis Tzompanakis. They are making the work in public rather than delivering finished pieces, so what you get is the part galleries hide: the roughing out, the dust, the arguing with a block. The Municipality of Chania, the Region of Crete and the MAP Antonia Papatzanaki Museum are behind it, admission is free, and you can simply walk in. Start times are not published because there is no performance to start, so go in daylight.
