1st Chania Sculpture Symposium — Opening Ceremony

Seven sculptors carve in public for a month at the Park of Peace and Friendship, opening night 21 Sept, free to watch throughout.

Chania gets its first sculpture symposium: seven working sculptors (Cris Gianakos, Aspasia Papadoperaki, Theodoros Papagiannis, Yannis Parmakelis, Kyriakos Rokos, Manolis Tzompanakis, Giorgos Houliaras) carve in the open air at the Park of Peace and Friendship for a full month, and anyone can walk up and watch a piece go from raw block to finished form. The opening ceremony is the one fixed date to put in the diary, but the real point is dropping by more than once across the month to see the work progress. Free, no booking, and the finished pieces stay in the city afterwards as the start of a permanent sculpture park. A related round table on public sculpture runs 8 October at the Mediterranean Architecture Center for anyone who wants the theory alongside the practice.
