Chania's Asia Minor refugee history is quieter than Thessaloniki's but it is there in the family names and the food, and this is the week the city says so out loud. Carvings of Memory is subtitled words, soil and melodies of the lost homeland, and the programme runs across several evenings at the Cultural Centre. Expect readings, music and testimony rather than a formal history lecture. It is free, it is in Greek, and it is one of the few things on the calendar that is aimed squarely at locals rather than visitors, which is exactly why it is worth going to.
