Cretan Glenti at Pachiana — Nikos Zoidakis

A schoolyard glenti with Nikos Zoidakis on the violin, run by the village football club. Seven euros, and the money goes to the team.

Nikos Zoidakis is one of the two or three violinists who can still fill a Cretan schoolyard on a Tuesday, and this is the good version of a village glenti: not a hotel show, but the local football club, Doxa Pachianon, raising money for the season by putting on the best night it can afford. Seven euros gets you in and goes straight to the team. The dance group Psiloreitis takes the floor between sets, which is when you see how the steps are actually meant to look. It runs in the yard of the 16th primary school in Pachiana, about ten minutes from the old town, and it will still be going long after the advertised start. Bring cash, the bar will not take a card.
