Lefteris Mathioudakis takes the floor at the Maganari, a cafe taverna in Kampanos, a small village in Selino out in the far south west of the region. The poster gives a 9pm start and two numbers for reservations, 28234 01014 and 69553 28089, which is the usual sign that the room fills before the music does. It is a real drive from Chania town, down through Kandanos and into the hills, so this is an evening out rather than a stop on the way to somewhere else. Village glentia are where Cretan music actually lives, and this is one of them rather than a show arranged for anyone passing through.
