Erotokritos for 2
Kornaros's Cretan epic Erotokritos, retold by two actors and a live musician, at the Old Customs House theatre, 30 Oct to 15 Nov.
Erotokritos is the poem every Cretan grows up with, Vitsentzos Kornaros's 17th-century romance of Aretousa and her knight, and its verses still turn up in mantinades at any glendi. This new staging by the Municipal and Regional Theatre of Crete strips it back to two actors, Konstantinos Tsonopoulos and Ilektra Fragkiadaki, with Nikos Mermigkas playing live on stage, in an adaptation directed and scored by Kostas Gakis. It runs at the Mikis Theodorakis theatre in the Old Customs House on the harbour: Wednesday to Saturday at 21:00, Sundays at 18:00 and 20:00, until 15 November. Performed in Greek, in Kornaros's Cretan verse. After Chania it tours the region, with dates at Maleme (18 November), Kandanos (20 November) and Kissamos (27 November).
