Nikolas Tzigkounakis at DUX — Frangokastello

Cretan music under the Venetian castle at Frangokastello, on the south coast.

Frangokastello is a square Venetian fort standing alone on a flat shore, with the Libyan Sea in front and the White Mountains straight up behind, and there is very little else there, which is the appeal. DUX is the cafe bar by the castle and on 21 August it puts on a full Cretan line-up: Nikolas Tzigkounakis with Manolis Vidakis on lyra and vocals, Stathis Alexandrakis and Emilios Volanakis on laouto and Thodoris Kotsifakis on percussion and wind. Music from 21:30. Getting here from the north coast means the Imbros gorge road and about ninety minutes, so most people make a day of it and swim first. Reservations on 697 8745 653.
