Creating Dreams by Hand: Chinese ink-wash animation masterclass
Hands-on ink-wash and stop-motion animation with Joe Chang, Yu Jin and Wen-Shing Ho. Sat 31 Oct, 13:00, limited places, €5.
This is the hands-on side of the Chania Film Festival's Chinese animation tribute, and a rare chance to learn from the people who built the field in China. Joe Chang, Yu Jin and Dr Wen-Shing Ho start with clips of animation made in traditional Chinese ink, then teach basic stop-motion with plasticine and paper figures alongside ink-painting skills, and get everyone designing simple characters that mix Greek motifs (Minoan, olives, the Mediterranean) with Chinese ones such as the panda, Sun Wukong and the dragon. The second half screens fifteen short films made entirely with AI by studios and universities in Hangzhou, Shanghai and elsewhere, shown in Greece for the first time, followed by a discussion. It is one of the festival's adult workshops: places are limited, registration closes two days before or when full, and the €5 contribution covers up to three workshops and goes in full to Kyttaro Chalepas.
