Sediments — Stefania Orfanidou and Georges Salameh

Two long-running archive projects meet in the old Archaeological Museum: memory, loss and the Mediterranean.

Sediments brings together two bodies of work that have each been going for years: Stefania Orfanidou's CACHE and Georges Salameh's LET US STOP AND WEEP, shown in dialogue for the first time and curated by Ioli Tzanetaki. Both circle the same ground, what memory keeps and what it lets sink, told through photographs, documents, objects and film gathered around the Mediterranean. The setting does a lot of the work: the Monastery of San Francesco on Halidon Street is a Venetian building with its own layers, and it housed the Archaeological Museum for decades before this. Alongside the show there are guided tours, workshops for children and adults, a performance of family stories from the Levant, and screenings of three Salameh films with the Chania Film Festival. Organised by the Region of Crete under the auspices of the National Museum of Contemporary Art.
