Almost everyone who comes to Kournas comes for the lake, hires a pedalo, and leaves. The village itself is up the hill, and on 16 August its cultural association, named for Agios Georgios, puts on the night that matters to the people who live there. Petros Maroulis is a serious lyra player with a big following in Apokoronas. Twenty euros includes the full menu, which is the local arrangement: you are buying dinner and a night, not a ticket. It starts at 22:00, late even by Cretan standards, so this is not one to bring tired children to. Book on 698 5574 061. If you are staying in Georgioupoli it is ten minutes inland and a completely different evening from the seafront.
