The Hive of Patterns: Children's Bee Workshop at the Russian Barracks
Kids aged 6-12 meet the Malia bee jewel of Cretan dress, learn why bees matter, then make their own hive. Booking by phone.
A Saturday-morning workshop for children aged 6 to 12 at the council's Russian Barracks, the old-town home of its Cretan traditions programme. The starting point is the bee pendant you often see on traditional Cretan costume, which goes back to the famous gold Minoan jewel found at the palace of Malia: two insects holding a drop of honey between them. From there the children look at how bees live and why they matter to nature, and then each one builds a colourful hive of their own on card, with bees, honeycomb and patterns borrowed from Cretan dress. It is run by artist Phaedra Traiforou of the duende art workshop, from 11:00 to 13:00. Places must be booked on 28213 41613 (the council's culture department, weekday working hours, from Monday 2 November); it is in Greek.
