Meat Pie Festival at Meskla — Nikos Pontikakis

Kreatotourta, the Cretan meat pie, given its own night in a mountain village. Twenty euros, full menu, cheaper for kids.

Kreatotourta is the dish Chania cooks for its biggest days: lamb or goat baked into a pie with mizithra and a little mint, and it takes long enough that nobody makes it casually. Meskla, a green village in the foothills where the water actually runs in August, builds a whole night around it. Twenty euros covers the full menu, not just entry, which is the local convention and good value once you see the plates coming out. Nikos Pontikakis plays lyra with Babis Vagionakis on laouto. The 19:30 start is genuinely early for a Cretan glenti, so this one is workable with children, and the organisers price them lower. Book on 698 2557 806. The drive up from the coast is about half an hour and worth doing in daylight.
