The council's Saturday-morning heritage workshops at the Rosikos Stratonas, the old Russian Barracks at the top of Meletiou Piga, turn to soap this week. Children aged 6 to 12 hear how soap was made and why it mattered in everyday life, then get their hands into the materials, colours and stages of making a bar themselves, which is about as messy and satisfying as a craft morning gets. It runs for two hours, from 11:00 to 13:00, as part of the Municipality's programme on Chania's intangible heritage. Places must be booked by phone with the council's Culture Department on 28213 41613, on working days from Monday 26 October, and these sessions fill, so ring early in the week.
