O Psarotromaras — Puppet Theatre of Crete

Puppets that glow in the dark. The Puppet Theatre of Crete brings its black-theatre show for children to the Lentariana.

Black theatre is the trick here: the stage goes dark, the puppeteers vanish into it, and all you see are the fish, floating in what looks like open water. Frosso Chatoglou wrote O Psarotromaras in the 1980s and it has aged well, because the story is simple and it is about something. A tyrant of a fishmonger wants to flatten the little fishes' homes to build himself a palace, and the young fish, helped along by a mermaid, work out that the only thing that stops him is all of them together. It runs 60 minutes with no interval, and the Puppet Theatre of Crete puts it at anywhere from age two up to the end of primary school, which in practice means the little ones watch the colours and the older ones follow the argument. General admission is €8, it starts at 20:30, and the Lentariana amphitheatre is open air, so bring something for a child to sit on.
