Pavlos Melis Kallitsounakis brings a concert of Nikos Xylouris and Dimitris Mitropanos songs to the plane tree square in Kandanos, and it is free. Those two names carry a lot of weight in a Cretan mountain village, and hearing them in the square rather than a theatre is the point. He is backed by a full band: Charalampos Voulgarakis on lyra, Stelios Iliakis on laouto and bouzouki, Manos Kostogiannis on keys and Giorgos Zampakas on drums. It starts at 20:30 on Thursday 27 August, staged by the Region of Crete. Kandanos is about fifty minutes up from Paleochora or an hour south west of Chania, so make an evening of it and eat in the village first.
