Skines and the villages around it grow the oranges that western Crete runs on, and once a year they throw a party about it. The Orange Festival is one of the fixtures of the Chania summer that almost no visitor hears about, which is a shame, because five euros and a Sunday night with Nikos Zoidakis playing is about as good as August gets. It runs on the grounds of the Skines touring club. Book ahead on the number the organisers publish if you want a table, because this one fills with people who drove out from town.
