The Thread of Florentini — A Musical Portrait of a Cretan Weaver
Piano, double bass, song and video art for Florentini Kaloutsi, the weaver who put Minoan motifs on the loom. Fri 9 Oct, 20:30, free.
A one-night music and poetry piece about Florentini Skouloudi-Kaloutsi (1890–1971), the Rethymno-born painter who trained in England, came home and turned Cretan weaving into something new at her Diplous Pelekys workshop, setting Minoan motifs into folk textiles that travelled far beyond Greece. Eleni Papaspyrou (piano), Giannis Polychronakis (double bass) and Stella Voutoufianaki (narration and song) weave Ravel, Eccles, Giannis Konstantinidis and Petros Perakis together with traditional melodies, two new pieces by Yael Levy inspired by Florentini's own textiles, and video art by Maria Papadaki. It is part of the Region of Crete's Crete Festival and plays the old customs house on the harbour on Friday 9 October at 20:30. Entry is free; expect the narration and poems in Greek, though the music needs no translation.
