Songs of the Mediterranean — Theano Papadaki & Sholto Kynoch

Free recital in the Grand Arsenal: soprano and piano through Greece, Italy, France and Spain, ending in rebetiko.

A free song recital in the vaulted hall of the Centre of Mediterranean Architecture, a building worth the walk on its own. Soprano Theano Papadaki and the British pianist Sholto Kynoch, who runs the Oxford Lieder festival, take a route through Konstantinidis, Monteverdi, Berio, Ravel, De Falla, Turina and Granados. Then, at one point in the evening, Papadaki puts the art song down and sings a Marika Politissa rebetiko accompanying herself on the violin, which is the real reason to go. It is part of the Region of Crete's Women, Cultural Heritage, Creation strand of the Crete Festival, so there is no ticket and no booking. The hall is not large, so arrive early.
