Michalis Tzouganakis at the East Moat

One of Crete's best known laouto players and singers, free at the East Moat Theatre. Region of Crete, no ticket, 21:30.

Michalis Tzouganakis is one of the few Cretan musicians who genuinely fills a theatre anywhere on the island, and this one costs nothing. He plays laouto as a lead instrument rather than an accompaniment, which is unusual, and his own songs sit alongside the traditional repertoire without either sounding out of place. The East Moat is an open-air venue built into the Venetian walls, and on a September night it is close to perfect. The Region of Crete is putting it on with the Municipality of Chania, so entry is free and unticketed, which means going early if you want to sit. Expect a crowd that sings along.
