Nikos & Antonis Xylouris at Kissamos

The Xylouris name carries more weight in Cretan music than any other, and Nikos and Antonis are playing Kissamos on the eve of the Dormition for eight euros, which anywhere else would be a joke. It is staged in an open field car park at Galanou Kampos rather than a venue, which is exactly how the big village nights work here: they need the space more than they need a stage. The local football club Kissamikos, founded 1926, is running it. Music from 21:00. Kissamos is about forty minutes west of Chania town and this is the far end of the region, so plan the drive back or find a room; on the fourteenth of August every road on the island is busy and the tavernas do not empty until dawn.
