The Best Beaches Near Chania, Ranked by a Local

Chania is spoiled for beaches, from sand you can walk to after breakfast to lagoons that need a whole day and an early start. A note on distances: everything here is measured from Chania town, where most people base themselves for a first trip, so if you are staying out in the resorts like Platanias or Agia Marina, some of these beaches will already be on your doorstep. The beaches you can walk to, or nearly

Nea Chora is the town beach, a 10 to 15 minute walk west of the Old Town, with good restaurants and bars along the front: busy but handy, and early some mornings you might spot turtles in the little fishing harbour. For clearer, calmer water about ten minutes by taxi from town, head to Agioi Apostoloi: Iguana Beach has golden sand and gentle swimming, and right next door the Blue Flag Yannis Beach has loungers, snack bars and an accessible sea ramp. You can walk between the two in ten minutes.

Organised beach days on Akrotiri

The Akrotiri peninsula, just east of town, has the most relaxed full-day setups. Loutraki is a beautifully organised beach with chilled DJ sets, waiter service on the sand and some of the best swimming around. Marathi is a calm bay nearby with really good beach restaurants, so the local move is an afternoon at Loutraki then dinner at Marathi. For something wilder, Stavros is a striking cove with amazing water and a short hike up to a cave: sunbeds can be pricey, so bring your own towels.

Beach clubs, if you want a scene

If you want music and cocktails rather than quiet, two clubs deliver. Cabana Mare, on the Blue Flag sands of Agia Marina a few kilometres west, is the main beach club: DJs, dancers, VIP cabanas and daytime party energy. Further out in Platanias, Neromilos is the polished option, a beach and pool club with an adults-only pool, cocktails and DJs on the site of a historic watermill. Both sit on the resort coast west of Chania, so from town they are a fifteen to twenty minute taxi, or a short walk if you are already staying out that way.

The famous day trips

Two beaches are worth clearing a whole day for. Balos is the postcard: a shallow turquoise lagoon on the Gramvousa peninsula, reached by ferry from Kissamos or by car via Kaliviani. Elafonissi, 75km southwest, is the pink-sand beach with unreal water, and in peak season the car park fills fast so arrive early. Falasarna, on the west coast, is a superb sunset beach with watersports and beach bars, but check the wind first: when it blows here, it really blows.

A quieter alternative, and a day off the sand

If you want calm without a full expedition, Aptera Beach is a quiet, recently modernised pebble beach a few minutes west of the Old Town, with food and drinks brought to your sunbed. And for a complete change, Lake Kournas is Crete’s freshwater lake: hire a pedal boat, look for turtles and swim, a lovely non-beach day if you have a car.

Before you go: wind, timing and getting there

Two rules save the day. First, check the wind, especially for the west-coast beaches like Falasarna. Second, for Balos and Elafonissi arrive early in July and August, both for parking and for the light on the water. The Akrotiri bays and town beaches are the easy, sheltered options when the meltemi is blowing or you just want to swim without a long drive.
