This is a food town. When you are ready to leave the town, the options are excellent. The lagoon beaches of Balos and Elafonissi are full-day trips worth the effort. Inland, Lake Kournas is Crete’s freshwater lake, with pedal boats and turtles. On the Akrotiri peninsula, Tzagaróli Monastery has its own vineyard and lemon trees in quiet courtyards, and Koukouvaya, a hilltop dessert cafe above town since 1997, has probably the best sunset view over Chania, famous for its Zoumero chocolate cake.

Chania without a car, with kids, or in the rain

You do not need a car to enjoy Chania: the Old Town is walkable, Nea Chora beach is a short stroll from the harbour, and cheap local buses reach the Agioi Apostoloi beaches and the western resorts. With children, the calm Blue Flag bays like Iguana and Yannis Beach are the easy choice, and Lake Kournas is a gentle non-beach day. And if it rains, lean into it: a long brunch, coffee from a local roaster and a slow lunch in a covered taverna make a rainy day in Chania quietly lovely.
